About
An old, early Canadian log
cabin, long abandoned in the
Ontario country-side.
Sitting on a small hill along
the “Old River Road” just
outside of the village of
Ompah, this old settler’s cabin
was built around the turn of
the century from rough-hewn
logs. The cabin is actually dug
into the hill it rests upon, with
the bottom part of the cabin
submerged below ground
level. With the main living
section below ground level, it
was well insulated, making the
cabin cool in the summer and
easier to keep warm in the
winter.
It was a bit of a cloudy day,
with a light wind rustling
through the trees and grass,
and the sun dodging in and
out of the clouds. While
waiting for the sun to come
out, I became reflective and
imagined the ghosts of
generations of families who
had lived here over the years.
Ompah is a small village about
an hour north of Perth,
Ontario located in the
township of North Frontenac.
